About Knold & Top ApS
A company with experience
The breeding began in 1996 as a hobby. The goal was to develop oilseed rape with a higher feeding value of the meal and less need of insecticide treatments. During the years the breeding developed into several unexpected directions based upon a series of discoveries.
In the years 2008 – 2010 we discovered the “reduced bitterness” which enabled us to develop tasty leaf vegetables from oilseed rape (colza).
Based on the reduced bitterness genes several new types of colza vegetables are now being bred. Really it should be possible to breed many forms of colza vegetables similar to white cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli etc., but it takes time and effort! The first of those new products: Colzacoli (analogous broccoli) should be ready within the next couple of years.
In general the vegetables based on colza (Brassica napus) will be more productive and more disease resistant compared to Brassica oleracea (cabbage). Probably they will be coarser in structure. Regarding human nutrition B. napus and B. oleracea most likely will be rather similar. Still the B. oleracea vegetables are based on a very long breeding history and a huge amount of varieties with many different properties exist among the cabbages. Colza vegetables will not replace the B oleracea vegetables, but they most likely will become an interesting supplement.
In 2007 the first variety (variety no 1 = Lyside) became listed in Denmark and in 2008 it was listed in the European Union. In 2013 variety no 2 = SilverShadow was listed together with variety no. 3 = WITT. Further to this variety no. 4 = LILPUT became listed in the European Union in 2014 and finally no 5 = JADAK in 2016. All breeding is financed from seed sale or license fees.
Those varieties can all be used for baby leaf production. Further to this some of them can also be used for sprouts or seedlings (cotyledons) or microgreens. Some of the varieties make tasty leaves also on rather old plants (until flowering).
